Trunk Bay, St. John, USVI

The smallest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John offers a wealth of adventures for charterers. SeanPavonePhoto/ stock.adobe. com

Beach day! In this little corner of St. John, choose among four major beaches and a handful of small beaches, all within a 1-mile area. Each beach has its own aura: Francis is quieter and has a boardwalk hike; Maho has food trucks; Cinnamon is the national park’s campgrounds; and Trunk Bay is one of the most beautiful. My favorite is the small beach to the west of Cinnamon Beach. You will probably have it to yourself. You can moor at any of the bays, but I prefer Francis Bay because it is the calmest and provides the best breeze. Another choice is to spend the night in Caneel Bay or off Honeymoon Beach, and dinghy around the corner into Cruz Bay to enjoy dinner and nightlife in town. —Shane McClellan, Lagoon 410 Guiding Light

We Asked...

Based on your own experience, what's one piece of advice you’d give to someone considering cruising the Caribbean?

Trust your instincts and go with the flow. The winds and currents can be unpredictable, so be flexible with your plans and embrace the spontaneity of life at sea. And don’t forget to enjoy every moment! —Terry D., via Instagram

Prioritize safety above all else. Before you even think about casting off, ensure you have all the necessary safety gear and that everyone on board knows how to use it. Familiarize yourself with local navigation charts and weather patterns, and always heed any warnings from experienced sailors in the area. —Jay H., Miami, FL

Pack light and pack smart. Space is limited on any boat, so only bring the essentials and opt for multi-purpose items whenever possible. And don't forget to stock up on plenty of sunscreen and bug spray—you'll thank me later when you're lounging on deck, soaking up the sun without a care in the world! —Martin K., via email

Immerse yourself in the local culture. Explore off-the-beaten-path islands, mingle with the friendly locals, and savor the delicious flavors of Caribbean cuisine. You'll discover hidden gems and create unforgettable memories that you simply can't find in any guidebook. —Rebecca H., Manchester, England

Prioritize sustainability and respect for the marine environment. Be mindful of your waste and always dispose of it properly. And when exploring the reefs and marine life, take only photographs and leave only bubbles. —Karen S., Bangor, ME
