GMB viewers rage at 'worst interview ever' as Richard Madeley clashes with MP

Richard Madeley grills Kemi Badenoch on knife legislation

Wednesday’s instalment of  got heated when slammed Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch. The pair clashed when discussing the upcoming legislation to ban certain weapons.

Currently, the legislation is anticipated to come into force in September and will outlaw the use of zombie knives and machetes. However, after the most recent attack in London this week, people are calling for the law to be brought forward and have more items included.

asked: “Can we do either of those things? Include such weapons in the legislation and make it right now?”. Badenoch replied: “My understanding is that swords as well have been banned, those types of samurai swords.

“We have been banning an increasing number of these dangerous weapons, but there will always be loopholes because we can’t ban all knives.” However, Madeley wasn’t impressed with her answer as he questioned why the legislation can’t be brought forward.

He fumed: “I’m sorry, it seems to me to be fundamental common sense, why does it take somebody six months to get rid of a zombie knife? I don’t understand, can you explain it?” As the MP stated she’s unable to give those details, she told Madeley he’d need to speak to someone at the Home Office.

Badenoch highlighted that they should discuss the matter with the Mayor of London on why violent crime is going up in the city but going down elsewhere.

Madeley replied: “What does it take for you guys to get your fingers out? You were saying, might, if and possibly. Look at what happened yesterday, look at what happened!”

The ITV host accused parliament of stalling the legislation, as the MP heavily disagreed.

She commented: “I think actually, the point you are making is borderline offensive. I’m a mother of three children. The idea that we would stall on stopping the murder of children as we saw in the horrific attack yesterday, is actually unconscionable .”

The MP told Madeley that him mentioning the attack yesterday is a distraction from the real problem, which she said is the safety on the streets of London not whether or not there’s extra time on the legislation.

However, things seemed to escalate between Madeley and Badenoch as they continued to speak over one another in their interview.

The MP later went on to add: “This Assumption that as soon as the government ban something that things disappear is completely wrong, you need to look at the whole-”

Although Madeley interjected sharing he doesn’t think anyone is silly enough to make that assumption. She continued: “That is implicit in the way that you’ve worded your question. I’m afraid Richard.”

Reeling, he replied: “I don’t think it’s implicit at all, I think that’s nonsense. We agree to disagree.” Addressing her earlier remarks to him using this week’s attack as a distraction, he wanted clarification on what she meant.

She added: “I mean that what we need to focus on is enforcement.” The pair got heated as she accused the host of misrepresenting her remarks.

He fumed: “I don’t think I’ve misrepresented! I think I’ve reflected everything that you said in my return questions. I’ve responded to what you’ve said and I’ve not summarised anything you’ve said either.”
