BBC Beyond Paradise 'throws shade' at Coronation Street as eagle-eyed fans go wild

Beyond Paradise: PC Kelby Hartford mentions Peter Barlow

Beyond Paradise fans were quick to comment on the BBC’s decision to reference a character from ITV’s Coronation Street. The quick quip took place during the season finale of the Death in Paradise spin-off.

On Friday (April 26), the second season of the crime-drama series was broadcast and saw Humphrey Goodman (played by Kris Marshall) and Martha Lloyd’s (Sally Bretton) betrothal being postponed. The Shipton Abbott team also worked to deal with nefarious cyber criminals and investigated a museum theft.

However, viewers were left “surprised” when a potential criminal was identified as looking like Coronation Street veteran Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne). Arriving on the scene, PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) claimed he had a “breakthrough” on Chief Superintendent Charlie Woods’ (Jade Harrison) nan.

“A lady in the next street saw a car parked outside her house,” he began. “Someone knocked on the door, but she didn’t answer and her Wi-Fi has been playing up.”

When asked by DS Esther Williams (Zara Ahmadi) what relevance the car had to the story, Kelby replied: “Because it was driven off by someone who looked like Peter Barlow.” Esther flashed Kelby a confused expression before questioning who exactly the man was.

In response, the PC simply said: “Coronation Street?” Following the cheeky interaction, fans flocked to social media to have their say.

One viewer took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and wrote: “There’s a lot of Corrie references tonight #beyondparadise.”

A second typed: “I was really surprised that a BBC show, would be mentioning Coronation Street then realised since they are looking for a villain, it's just throwing some shade very cheeky.”

“Please tell me when the criminal is captured that he will be played by someone who was in Coronation Street #BeyondParadise,” said another.

A fourth fan commented: “If Chris Gascoyne doesn't turn up in this episode, I'm going to be disappointed.”

“They should have cast the actual Peter Barlow actor,” said another. “Must be looking for work since he left Corrie #beyondparadise.”

Peter Barlow, the son of Ken Barlow (William Roache), starred on ITV’s Coronation Street between 2000 and 2023.

Portrayed by Chris, 56, Peter exited the show last year after receiving a one-way ticket out of Weatherfield by Carla Connor (Alison King).

His final scenes showed him boarding the first tram he could get, without saying farewell to his son Simon Barlow (Alex Bain).

Discussing his dramatic exit with BBC, Chris said: “The thing that upset me though was walking away from the people I work with and I don't just mean the actors. I've known all these people for nearly half my life.”

During his soap tenure, the father-of-three received nominations for his role as Peter - including Best Dramatic Performance at the 2010 British Soap Awards.

Episodes of Beyond Paradise are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
