Coronation Street fans 'work out' blackmail revenge twist as character exits soap

Coronation Street: Toyah smashes car window with a spade

It looks as though Leanne Battersby (played by Jane Danson) could find herself in danger soon. On Friday’s instalment of the show, viewers saw her delve deep into her past as she confided in Rowan Cunliffe (Emrhys Cooper).

As she started to get more drawn into his self-improvement institute, Leanne used his uploading tools and reality coding methods to unlock her trauma in the latest episode. Highly emotional, she spilled her heart out to Rowan.

From speaking about the death of her young son Oliver to her past working as an escort, Leanne didn’t hold back. While crying, she admitted as though she felt judged and was being punished.

As Rowan seemed to guide her to speak more about her troubles, Leanne seemed thrilled with her progress and confessed she felt lighter after spilling her inner thoughts to him. However, what she didn’t realise was he had been recording her on his phone the entire time.

It wasn’t long before viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Rowan as many believe he’s got a sinister plan in the works. @pam_debeauvoir said: “Leanne, Rowan was probably recording this and will blackmail you. This man is no good. Wake up!”

@suzicarrigan added: “Pardon the pun but red light alert [sic] Rowan is coming for your money with some blackmailing Leanne."

@RyanTheSoapking commented: “Imagine if Rowan is related to Nathan Curtis in some way which links his return to Weatherfield?”

@griannedoherty questioned: “NOOO Leanne, DON'T f****ng tell him especially given they've literally just met. He's clearly gonna use it for blackmail material at some point, but the real question is, who is he actually working for exactly? Harvey? Nathan? Using him to get revenge on the Platts?

@Blockbustargirl said: “So let me guess, Leanne will try and leave the cult and refuse to pay and Rowan will blackmail her with the restaurant fire saying she'll go down for arson.”

With @sparkysue tweeting: “Oh dear, is that Rowan geezer going to blackmail Leanne or what?”

After speaking to Rowan, fans saw the impact his methods are starting to have on the relationships around Leanne.

Her sister Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) started to speak about her day and how she stopped by the park where she buried her daughter, although Leanne put an abrupt end to the conversation.

She told her sister that she’s unable to absorb her trauma, leaving Toyah visibly hurt by her brutal words.

Could Leanne be falling into Rowan’s trap and find herself in trouble further down the line?

Elsewhere, viewers said goodbye to long-standing character Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) after 24 years.

Fans saw Eileen leave Weatherfield to see her son Jason Grimshaw (Ryan Thomas) abroad after he had broken his back.

However, her absence isn’t permanent as the actress Sue Cleave is taking time away from the soap to star in the stage musical Sister Act.

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV from 8pm.
