Notts County fan David Coote has been appointed as the referee for clash with on Saturday. It comes after complained that Luton-supporting Stuart Attwell was the video assistant referee (VAR) for their defeat against last weekend.

Forest were left furious after being denied what they felt should have been three penalties during their 1-0 loss at Everton. In one incident, Callum Hudson-Odoi went down under a challenge by Toffees defender Ashley Young.

On-field referee Anthony Taylor appeared to gesture that both players had got a touch on the ball and that Young's tackle was therefore fair. However, television replays showed that to not be the case.

Despite that, VAR Attwell did not urge Taylor to have a second view of the challenge on the pitch-side monitor. Forest subsequently posted a scathing message on social media platform X, criticising the PGMOL for the appointment of Attwell and for what they believed were three incorrect decisions.

Forest then made subsequent posts demanding that the audio recordings for conversations between Taylor and Attwell for the three key decisions be made public. The Football Association announced an investigation into Forest's initial tweet in addition to post-match comments made by manager Nuno Espirito Santo and defender Neco Williams.

Attwell will referee Fulham’s game against Crystal Palace on Saturday, while Taylor will oversee West Ham vs Liverpool at London Stadium. Coote, from Nottingham, has been selected as the referee for Wolves vs Luton.

The PGMOL confirmed to Express Sport that Coote was a Notts County fan last year. It came after a fake social media profile purporting to be Coote and featuring a Manchester United logo as the display picture went viral before the Red Devils faced Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.

Coote does not support United and does indeed follow the League Two club. County are the long-term local rivals of Forest.

Forest - who have been deducted four points for breaches of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations - are engaged in a relegation dogfight with Luton. Everton’s victory over the Midlands club on Sunday lifted the Toffees five points above the relegation zone.

Luton occupy the final relegation spot with four matches remaining. Rob Edwards’s side have 25 points to Forest’s 26, with the fight for survival looking likely to go down to the final game of the season.
