Coronation Street star Andy Whyment has responded to claims that he makes a lot of money.

The actor is famed for having spent more than 20 years playing Weatherfield's Kirk Sutherland, with it being rumoured that he has recently signed a contract for another year.

With him being such a long-lasting and much-loved character on the ITV soap, many fans have just assumed that he is raking in the cash with a big bank balance.

However, the humble soap star quashed those claims with his most recent Instagram post, showing him being proud as punch with his latest purchase - A new Kia car.

Andy, 43, treated himself to a sportage GT line Kia which is said to come with a price tag of £40,000.

He thanked the salesmen at the car dealership as he smiled next to his new vehicle, and wrote: "New car day, thanks to @lee_ablett1974 and the team @bolton_kia for fantastic service as always."

But the post only sparked curiousity from commenters with one user posting: "I'd of thought with all your money you'd of had a decent car!"

Andy shone a little light on the reality of a TV star's wage, as he replied: "Kia’s are a decent car, and I don’t earn as much as you probably think I do."

Across ITV soaps Emmerdale and Coronation Street, the pay structure is basically the same, as actors get a fee per episode, which can range from £400 to £2,000.

They reportedly get a guaranteed number of episodes a year (as few as 30 or as many as 100) and a repeat fee.

Salaries can therefore range from £12,000 to well over £200,000 depending on popularity.

The highest paid actors on Corrie are thought to be Jack P Shepherd who plays the role of David Platt and cobbles legend William Roache who plays Ken Barlow.

The Mirror reported in October 2018 that Jack had been awarded a bumper new contract worth £250,000, and in 2021, it was reported that executives were looking to sign William up for another year in a bumper deal worth six figures.

Meanwhile, Emmerdale seems to be a bit more tight-lipped than Coronation Street about stars' salaries, but some stars will have racked up a decent amount after appearing in thousands of episodes.
