Disney+ Reportedly Adding Always-On Channels

Disney+ is reportedly gearing up for a significant revamp by introducing always-on streaming channels, aimed at enhancing viewer engagement and retention. According to The Information, these channels will provide continuous access to Disney's extensive catalog, featuring dedicated channels for major franchises such as Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar, as well as channels showcasing Disney's classic animations.

Since its launch in 2019, Disney+ has rapidly emerged as a key player in the streaming market, consistently expanding its offerings by securing rights to popular titles and rolling out exclusive series. The rumored addition of always-on linear channels is seen as a strategic move to boost viewer retention and streamline the viewing experience, enabling background streaming or spontaneous viewing marathons without the hassle of selection prompts.

This strategy reflects the growing popularity of FAST (free ad-supported streaming TV), as other services like Paramount+ and Amazon’s Prime Video have already adopted similar 24/7 streaming models. Despite plans to include advertisements, Disney+ reportedly intends to incorporate these channels within its existing subscription tiers, setting it apart from platforms that offer ad-supported content that is free of charge.

Additionally, Disney is set to tighten control over account sharing with new paid plans, aiming to roll out these changes globally by September. This strategy reflects an industry-wide shift towards combining the simplicity of traditional TV viewing with the modern flexibility of streaming, possibly reshaping viewer habits and expectations in the streaming domain.
