Taiwan commissions two new navy ships

The ministry said it detected nine Chinese planes and six ships operating around the island between Tuesday afternoon and yesterday morning.

In Beijing yesterday, a spokesperson for the Cabinet’s Taiwan Affairs Office criticized live-firing exercises by the Taiwanese military planned for next month near the Taiwan-held island group of Kinmen just off the Chinese coast.

“Any provocative move Taiwan’s military takes is doomed to fail,” Chen Binhua said at a biweekly news conference. MDT/AP
