Heathrow celebrated the milestone of one million flights at its Terminal 2 this weekend.

The honour went to Icelandair’s flight F1454 from Keflavik International Airport, which was greeted with a celebratory message from Heathrow’s air traffic control tower.

The terminal will also celebrate its 10th birthday this summer, having opened on 4 June, 2014 with the arrival on a United Airlines service from Chicago.

Also known as The Queen’s Terminal, the building was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 23 June, 2014, and occupies the site of the original Terminal 2 (the airport’s oldest terminal) and the adjacent office space known as the Queens Building.

Since its inauguration The Queen’s Terminal has welcomed more than 144 million passengers. Heathrow recently outlined plans to build a new dedicated baggage system a T2 – the terminal currently uses a 30-year-old system housed within the airport’s Terminal 1, which closed to passengers in 2015 after 47 years of operation.

Terminal 2 is the base for Star Alliance carrier operations at Heathrow, and is also served by airlines including Aer Lingus, Eurowings, Icelandair, JetBlue and Loganair.

Earlier this month Heathrow upgraded its traffic forecast for 2024, following record passenger numbers in the first quarter of this year.

The airport says it now expects to welcome 82.4 million passengers this year, up by one million on its previous forecast in February.
