Smoke and jeers: T-Mobile’s 4/20 gimmick, rolling papers included, slams ‘half-baked’ Verizon

Being served with papers has never been this fun. T-Mobile, ratcheting up its ongoing desire to harsh the mellow of fellow wireless companies, sent out a special packet in honor of 4/20, today’s unofficial official holiday for marijuana fans everywhere. The envelope we received at GeekWire contained 16 large “rolling papers,” each emblazoned with a stoned-looking dog and meme-like text talking trash about various Verizon business decisions. The package and the meme-papers were all labeled with the hashtag #VerHIGHzon, and inside, Bellevue, Wash.-based T-Mobile asked, “How high is Verizon? They’re releasing Q1 earnings on 4/20.

It’s not the only half-baked choice they’ve made recently … .”

Here’s a closer look at a few of the papers and the assorted digs leveled at Verizon:

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the magenta-hued T-Mobile would go so blatantly green on a day celebrated by pot smokers. Plenty of companies try to earn a little extra credibility with young people on 4/20 by walking right up to the line and practically admitting how cool it is to smoke weed. But most stop short. A great Washington Post story this week looked at how brands do that — and how pot advocates wish they wouldn’t.

But T-Mobile CEO John Legere is never one to shy away from blunt talk. Whether it’s 4/20 or any other make believe day of the year.

If Legere has magenta checkered Vans in his closet (he must), he should be filming a knock-off of this classic “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” scene — with mobile phones instead of land lines. “Can you hear me now?” … “No, dude!”
