Weird things sometimes happen on ESPN’s “Pac-12 After Dark” telecast from time to time. The inclusion of Mike Leach’s Washington State team seems to make the probability of such an occurrence spike significantly.
This week, it had nothing to do with the product on the field. Instead, it had to do with an interview Leach gave prior to the game that was aired during the ESPN broadcast.
While some SEC fans might be dreaming about ways to get the oddly effective coach on the sidelines at their school in 2018, Leach has bigger things to worry about during his day-to-day routine in Pullman, including an apparent encounter with a herd of “goths” at a nearby cemetery during his daily commute.
“There’s all these goths, there’s like six goth people,” Leach explained to ESPN’s Rocky Boiman. “Well, they’re more like between I’m gonna say 20 to 30-year-old goths. You know, they didn’t have school. It is not like they were skipping school. And who knows, I don’t know what they’re going to do.
“‘Hey how you guys doing, great cemetery up here!’ And they just kind of gave me a frowny goth look. And just sort of nodded because goths aren’t in good moods anyway. I mean everything’s about spider webs and black hair, black this — really white faces. So anyway, hopefully I made about six new friends, but they didn’t speak much, so.”

Leach, who is known for his off-the-wall interviews, love for pirates and wide-open offensive approach to the game, would be an intriguing coaching candidate for the SEC if he’d entertain a move.
He makes in the neighborhood of $3 million per season at Washington State, where he has gone 35-35 through his first 70 games since joining the Cougars in 2011. However, he logged 17 wins in 2015-16, and got off to a 6-0 start to the 2017 season before dropping a game to Cal on the road.
Leach once led Texas Tech, where he ran up an 84-43 record from 2000-09, to a No. 1 ranking.
