Man Utd Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Ed Woodward transfers

Before Manchester United players trudged off the Old Trafford pitch after a dismal 2-0 defeat to Cardiff City on the final day of last season's Premier League campaign, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ed Woodward talked over targets.

The consensus was that the Red Devils required an overhaul in order to challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City going forward.

However, Manchester United fans hoping for a summer of huge change were left disappointed. Many players left - but only Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Daniel James and Harry Maguire came in.

Express Sport now takes a look at how United would have looked had they got the players they wanted.

Jadon Sancho

Manchester United were understood to want Jadon Sancho during the summer transfer window but were forced to settle for James instead.

The Borussia Dortmund star was in-demand over the summer after flourishing in the Bundesliga last season.

However, the deal failed due to United's failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Sancho was unwilling to settle for strutting his stuff in the Europa League and has gone on to continue to thrive for Dortmund.

Whether United are able to get into a position where they can reignite their interest is something only time will tell.

Declan Rice

Manchester United have long had their eye on Declan Rice.

The Red Devils earmarked the England international as a potential signing once they knew Ander Herrera would not be renewing his contract.

But though United admire Rice, they failed to make a move for the West Ham star.

The club instead focused their efforts on strengthening their defence but they may look to bring the West Ham star to Old Trafford when the transfer window reopens this winter.

Ivan Rakitic

Manchester United had to make do with a summer of uncertainty surrounding Paul Pogba, who was wanted by Real Madrid.

And amid the uncertainty over the France international's future they made Barcelona star Ivan Rakitic a target.

Ultimately, Pogba stayed and United failed to follow up their interest in Rakitic.

Interest at Old Trafford exists and remains, however.

And with Rakitic struggling to get into Ernesto Valverde's Barcelona side, they may look to bring him in this winter.

Mario Mandzukic

Late in the transfer window, knowing that Romelu Lukaku was heading to Inter Milan, United eyed a move for Mario Mandzukic.

However, they left it too late to bring the 33-year-old Juventus striker to Old Trafford.

Express Sport understands the Croatia international has now verbally agreed to make the move to United when the transfer window reopens in January.

But with the Red Devils struggling in front of goal, fans can be forgiven for wishing he had joined in the summer instead.
