Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson may take longer to return from his calf injury than the club expect because he is a “big lad”, according to former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley.

Brazil No 1 Alisson has been out of action since injuring his calf during the Premier League opening day win over Norwich at Anfield in August.

Liverpool have confirmed he is making steady progress in his recovery, with Adrian set to continue to deputise against Newcastle United this weekend.

But Burley has warned fans it may take a bit longer than they think for Alisson to return due to his strong body make-up.

The problem is he’s a big lad and that’s a lot of tonnage going through those calves

“The problem is he’s a big lad and that’s a lot of tonnage going through those calves” Burley told ESPN FC.

“Well yeah [it may take an extra couple of weeks], he’s a big old unit isn’t he.

“He’s like huge, you wouldn’t want to meet him in a dark alley, you know what I mean.

“I’m not telling you anything you don’t know but obviously the calves are super-important for every player, but for a goalkeeper springing around…

“I had calf problems at the end of my career with a lot of wear and tear and scar tissue in there and you know when you make that first movement, when the physio says to you ‘you’re good, your calf’s good’ and then you go and the whole body weight goes through it.

“So it’s a tricky one and it plays with the mind. That was my medical explanation.”

Liverpool goalkeeper coach John Achterberg said earlier this week he could not put a timescale on Alisson’s return.

“Ali has been working with Dave [Rydings] in the gym a lot to improve the strength and try to keep the fitness levels up,” Achterberg said.

“In the last few days he has been out on the pitch to do some catching and footwork, as well as small passing drills.

“He has made steady progress, but it is difficult to say how long it will take or how it will progress. It needs time and we cannot look too far ahead, so we take each day as it comes, see how he feels, and then make progress from that.”
