In a flash, the 2017 NCAA Tournament dropped from 68 contenders for a national title to 16. And it will only drop further from there, as games resume on Thursday, March 23 to pare the field down to a Final Four by Sunday evening.
On Monday, a fresh set of odds was released for winning the national championship. The Kansas Jayhawks are the favorite to bring home the trophy with 19-to-4 odds, following closely by the North Carolina Tar Heels at 5-to-1.
And while there is a third No. 1 seed remaining in Gonzaga, the Bulldogs are actually at the same odds to win the national title as the No. 2-seeded Arizona Wildcats in their region at 13-to-2. The fourth No. 1 seed, Villanova, was eliminated by Wisconsin in the second round of play.
Though many doubted its strength as a basketball conference this season, the SEC has placed three teams in the Sweet 16. Among those conference representatives, Kentucky leads the way with 10-to-1 odds, followed closely by Florida at 12-to-1. South Carolina is considered a long shot at 50-to-1 after beating Duke, with only Xavier behind the Gamecocks on the list of 16 teams remaining.
