Real Madrid have reportedly declined the chance to sign Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk, despite his agent offering him to the Spanish giants. The Dutch defender is currently set to become a free agent in the summer, with no new contract agreed at Anfield.

Since joining from Southampton in 2018, the 33-year-old has been instrumental in Liverpool's Champions League and Premier League victories.

However, if fresh terms are not agreed, he could leave for nothing at the end of the season, alongside Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

According to Spanish media outlet Relevo, Van Dijk's agent proposed a potential free transfer to Real Madrid, but the club declined.

It's reported that the player's representative informed Madrid officials of the veteran defender's interest in moving to the Bernabeu, particularly given their recent injury issues in central defence.

However, Madrid rejected the offer as they are targeting other players more aligned with their project. In addition to Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold has also been linked with Real Madrid, with a bid for the right-back already having been turned down.

Van Dijk has spoken out amid rumours swirling about his and Alexander-Arnold's future following Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

Despite a less than stellar performance that sparked suggestions of distraction, Van Dijk dismissed such claims, stating: "I am fine with [speculation]. Trent has his own people around him, his family and we are there as well. He wants to perform in the best way possible like we all do. That is the main focus. In my opinion, maybe ask him, that is the distraction... the game."
