Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai played a crucial role in aiding his injured team-mate Barnabas Varga during their last-gasp win over Scotland. Varga was accidentally hit in the face by Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn's arm while challenging for the ball from a Szoboszlai free-kick.

The Ferencvaros forward seemed to suffer a reaction to the impact and then laid motionless on the pitch as his team-mates frantically called for medical assistance. Medical staff eventually arrived with a stretcher, but the delay angered the Hungarian players.

Captain Szoboszlai took matters into his own hands, pulling the stretcher towards Varga to speed up the process. Szoboszlai was visibly upset as screens were put up around Varga, who received treatment before being transported to a nearby hospital.

Hungary's manager Marco Rossi confirmed post-match that Varga had sustained facial fractures and a concussion, but was now "healthy" aside from these injuries. "What I heard from the players is that Barney looked unconscious.

"Everybody was really worried about his condition, and worried that the doctors arrived a bit late. Probably they didn't realise it was a dangerous situation.

"We can say now that Barney is not under any kind of risks. Probably he will be operated on in the coming hours because he suffered a fracture here [points to cheek], but he's healthy. Of course if we will go through the competition he will not be any more part of the team."

Ronald Sallai, who was Man of the Match after assisting Kevin Csoboth for the 100th minute winner that knocked Scotland out and kept Hungary in with a chance of qualification, said: "It was a terrible moment to see him like that.

"He'll have to go tough a minor operation, but we cross our fingers for him that he can return. Naturally it was a terrible incident. Of course we were fighting for him in the remaining minutes and this win is dedicated to him."
