Letter: What era does the Make

When was America ever great? Was that when slavery was legal? When LGBTQ+ and people of color were treated worse than animals? When women and people of color couldn’t own land and get their own bank accounts?

Was “MAGA” when marital rape and violence were the accepted norm? When women were forced to have as many children as their wombs could produce? When women’s salaries were much less than men’s for the same work?

“MAGA” could mean millions of babies will be born into abhorrent situations because their parents would have no choices.

Does “MAGA” mean regressing to the past when humans with physical and mental disabilities were institutionalized and often tortured.

Think about it. What does “MAGA” really mean? Donald Trump couldn’t care less about us, about Making America Great — now or ever! He calls his opponents “vermin” and claims immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country.” To encourage his followers to engage in hostility, he uses tyrannical language comparable to Nazi propaganda to dehumanize people. He threatened us again by painting apocalyptic pictures which blatantly incite violence. “If I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the country…that’s the least of it.”

To Trump “MAGA” means his way or war. “Either the deep state destroys America or we destroy the deep state,” and “for those who have been wronged and betrayed, I am your retribution” he announced. Donald pledged to a CPAC gathering, “I am your warrior. I am your justice,” and then he called 2024 “the final battle.”

Trump has failed again and again, but his threats remain. He is fighting against all of us; you, me, our children, our grandchildren, our country and our freedom.

Will we turn our country over to a narcissist dictator, or to an imperfect democracy?
