"Instead of sweeping the Taj Mahal, the Uttar Pradesh CM should clean the minds of the members of his party and cabinet," ANI quoted Owaisi as saying.
Owaisi was referring to the CM's visit to the Taj Mahal on Thursday where he launched a mega cleanliness drive and even swept litter near its west gate.
Adityanath's visit to the mausoleum, the first by a BJP CM of the state, is being perceived as an exercise in damage control, after the saffron party got caught in a spate of Taj-related controversies, starting from the failure of UP's tourism department booklet to mention the Mughal monument among the key attractions in the state.
BJP MLA Sangeet Som had questioned why people like Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, "who tried to wipe out Hindus", are considered part of India's culture and history, and had threatened to "change that history".
Even after Adiytanath's statement that the Taj is decidedly Indian, BJP MP Vinay Katiyar had jumped in to say that "the monument used to be a temple that was destroyed by the Mughals."
