No degree? Well, have you ever thought pursuing a career as a nuclear power reactor operator?
With an average salary of $91,170, that’s just one of the top 25 highest-paying jobs for those who never graduated from college, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Other jobs include police supervisor at $84,840 and electrician at $77,200. Not bad, considering the median household income in the United States is $56,516.
Cost-estimating website HowMuch.net crunched the numbers and created this scatter plot graph. The more dots, the more people work in that profession; the higher the dots on the vertical axis, the more money they make.
As you can see, there aren’t many farmers, but there are lots of claims adjusters:
“Specialization is the key to earning a high wage, especially in an area that can’t be outsourced,” says HowMuch.net’s Raul Amoros. “Elevator installers, power plant operators, transportation inspectors — these are professions that require a high level of skill and must be done in person by someone with years of experience and certifications.”
While these 25 jobs pay relatively well, however, they are rare in terms of the big picture as they employ about 1.4 million people total. The entire working age population in the U.S., as HowMuch.net points out, tops 205 million.Chart:best-payingjobsthoselookingworkwithoutcollegedegree
