BBC Breakfast: Sally reports on Manchester Airport disruption

BBC Breakfast host Sally Nugent halted Monday's show to deliver some breaking weather and travel news.

During the latest show, Sally, 53, revealed that there was snow travel disruption as Manchester Airport had announced that their runways were 'temporarily closed due to heavy snow'.

Co-host Jon Kay said: "That winter weather still causing problems this morning, Sally" to which Sally replied: "Absolutely right, Jon! Further snow, ice and rain are causing more disruption across the UK this morning."

It was at this point a breaking news banner flashed up on screen to which Sally announced: "Manchester Airport says it has shut both of its runways for the second time in two days because of heavy snow in the area."

Manchester Airport took to Twitter, now X, on Monday morning to update passengers. The message read: "Our runways are temporarily closed due to heavy snow as our teams work hard to clear them as quickly as possible.

"The safety of our passengers is our top priority and we appreciate your patience during this time. Please check with your airline for the latest flight information and allow extra travel time today. We will update you as soon as possible. Thank you."

In an update at 7:15am, Manchester Airport said: "Our runways are now open but as a result of the earlier closure some departures and arrivals may still experience delays.

"Please check with your airline for the latest flight information and allow extra time for your journey today. We would like to thank our teams for their hard work in getting the runways operational again. The safety of our customers remains our top priority. Thank you for your understanding and patience."

It comes as weather warnings remain in force across much of the UK on Monday as commuters are urged to brace for snow showers, ice and rain.

More travel disruption is likely due to the adverse conditions, including flooding from heavy rain and thawing snow, the Met Office said, with more than 60 flood warnings and 260 flood alerts issued. It comes after most of the UK saw heavy snow or icy rainfall over the weekend.

BBC Breakfast continues every day at 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
