Antiques Roadshow: Moment Mark Smith given pair of boots
An Antiques Roadshow guest was left open-mouthed after hearing the true valuation of an item she had “chucked in the bin”.
The hit BBC show returned for another episode on Sunday (January 5) with Fiona Bruce back at the helm.
For this week’s instalment, the show paid a visit to the Firstsite contemporary art gallery in Colchester.
And members of the public were quick to show off their prized possessions to be valued by experts. But things took an incredible turn when a woman brought in an item.
Expert Siobhan Tyrrell was on hand to value the item. She said: “You brought this in today and you told me that it almost got chucked in the bin.”
The woman replied: “Well, it did yes,” as Siobhan shared her initial first thoughts. She said: “I’ve got to admit, it looks a little bit like a car crash because it’s been soldered so much but actually it’s closed back.
“And then when I turned it over and had a look at the stones, we’ve got old cut diamonds,” she added, as she turned it over. The guest quipped: “I know I’m amazed.”
Explaining, Siobhan went on: “We’ve got emeralds and we’ve got garnets. It looks certainly 1700s.”

And as for how much it’s worth, she revealed: “I would’ve said that’s going to make £300 to £400.” The valuation stunned the guest, who then proclaimed: “ Well, it's made my day! It really has.”
Meanwhile, in last week’s episode, viewers were treated to a special episode delving into the history of food.
The show explored various contraptions that have been used in kitchen's gone by, including elaborate cork screws, mandolines and silver spoons. During the roadshow that took place in Derbyshire, one guest was particularly surprised to learn the true purpose of an antique kitchen item that she had been using as a fruit bowl.
Antiques Roadshow airs every sunday at 7pm on BBC One.
