The Repair Shop: Guest breaks down in tears over her teddy bear

Amanda Middleditch has revealed which family member helped her with her restoring skills. Since 2017, Julie Tatchell and Amanda Middleditch have been known as the Teddy Bear Ladies on The Repair Shop.

As the popular show heads into its 13th series, expert Amanda has given an insight into how she learnt her skillset. Admitting that she’s had a lifelong love of teddy bears from a young age, Amanda revealed she was spoiled with the amount she had.

The BBC star said: “I had so many teddies and I adored every single one of them. I think it carried on into my adult life as I started to collect more specific things.”

Although the expert decided she wanted to start making them after getting more decisive about what she brought. However, The Repair Shop star revealed it was one special family member who she pays homage to for her restoring career.

Amanda added: “I had sewing skills from my grandma, she taught me to embroider and to darn. At the time I thought it was a bit of a chore but now I look back on that so fondly.

“She gave me those basic skills that I've been able to transfer now into what is my job which is totally wonderful.”

Amanda admitted she and Julie hit it off straight away after they met when she walked into her shop with her bears in tow.

She continued: “She has the passion for teddy bears but in a different way to me.

“So, we kind of complement each other which works really well. We're a good team.”

When the show isn’t filming, the duo have their own business called Bear It in Mind, which they set up in 2006, although they recently revealed they won’t be taking on any more restoration projects.

Along with this, they also have their own podcast, Barely Begun, where they share hints and tips about teddy bear care and speak about their lives.

At the start of the year, the duo revealed an exciting business move as they told their followers they’d written a children's book.

Taking to their Instagram, they wrote: “Here is our exciting news. We are thrilled to introduce you to Bartie Bristle. Our first children's book. Published by Walker Books. Beautifully illustrated by @theremaybecats.

“Set in a village in the heart of the Old Woods, the magical world of the teddy bear shop and the heart-warming stories of Bartie and his teddy bear friends will captivate children and parents alike.”

The book features the character of Bartie Bristle, who was the logo on Julie’s shop, and the other toys from children who came into Julie’s shop over the years.

In the book, Julie has been reimagined as Mrs T and Amanda as Rose.

The Repair Shop is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
