White Cube is hosting a new solo exhibition of paintings by the emerging Canadian artist, Danica Lundy. The Brooklyn-based artist creates euphoric compositions that comment on the transformative experience of adolescence.

In Boombox, Lundy unpacks the ways in which structures of power are subtly encoded in our identity, relationships and social strata. Through bold gestural brushstrokes, she creates anthropomorphized settings, where people blend with their objects and environments, reflective in the muddled color palettes and synthesizing of forms. Lundy begins each painting by revisiting her own youth, conflating these memories with universal iconography — often depicted in oil paint from the vantage point of a camera lens, inconspicuously peering into an intimate fleeting moment.

"Lundy deploys the wet language of oil paint to get at the content (and discontent) she’s chasing," explains New Zealand writer and curator, Justin Paton. "In her hands, painting is an audaciously refreshed technology for seeing into the world – a way of peeling back the skin of rooms, cars and bodies and fearlessly pushing in."

The frenetic dynamism within her static compositions are notably inspired by the music she listens to in the studio. "A good album is a little time machine," Lundy mused, "it starts playing and you can taste and hear and smell the place you were the first time it came on. Every time you listen you bring to it a changed version of yourself and get to find new meaning."

Boombox is on view at White Cube's Mason’s Yard location until June 29, 2024.
