Emmerdale has confirmed a heart-stopping accident that will leave lives hanging in the balance next month. A catastrophic car crash into an icy lake will see several beloved characters fighting for survival in scenes set to air on the ITV soap in February.

Last month, a flashforward clip hinted at danger for at least one villager as viewers saw an iced-over lake with someone trapped underneath trying to break free. The crew have been working on night shoots with special effects to create some dramatic episode content.

While it's not yet known if any character dies, speculation is rife that we could lose a major character. Fans are already guessing who might meet a grim end.

Following reports that Roxy Shahidi, who has played Leyla Cavanagh for 16 years, is leaving Emmerdale, some fans believe her character could be killed off in the epic stunt. However, others are convinced they've "figured out" exactly who is involved in the crash after spotting cryptic clues in new publicity photos.

One social media user wrote: "Layla isn't married, thats the left hand so must be someone who's married.", reports Leeds Live.

Another added: "Oh I have figured it out that's a Honda jazz same as the one that lifted April, by the looks of it, it's either April or Ruby's Dad."

One viewer noted: "That's the car that stopped to pick up April."

Another concurred: "If that's a Honda jazz reg number MJ55 FYW then it's the car that picked up April and whoever's under the Ice has a wedding ring on, spent all night freeze framing."

Soap fans know that young April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) disappeared on Christmas Day, last seen entering a car with an unknown driver.

Some viewers believe that Ruby Fox-Milligan's (Beth Cordingly) abusive father Anthony Fox (Nicholas Day) has taken her, but April's location remains unconfirmed.
