SZA has hit back at body-shaming comments from fans on social media and recalled the mental toll the COVID-19 pandemic had on her.

The comments from the 2024 Glastonbury headliner came after she shared a now-deleted video on social media, reflecting on her time living at her mother’s house during the pandemic in 2020.

While numerous fans shared supportive messages following her discussion of mental health, some made remarks about her changing appearance over the years. One in particular compared the throwback video to the singer now, writing: “aka before she got big and bbl culture like.”

SZA soon replied to the comment on X (formerly Twitter), explaining that it was remarks like that that pushed her to create distance between herself and her fans over the years. “Yall say weird shit like this and wonder why I’m different and don’t feel comfortable w yall anymore . Lol,” she wrote.

She continued: “Yall do realize I mean different as in I don’t go on live+ talk and don’t communicate w yall like that anymore lmao, not different as in change my appearance tf.”

SZA also went on to shed further light on the mental and physical obstacles she had to confront during the lockdown in another post.

“Covid was hard … my granny had just died .. I was hella depressed n masking. Not eating. Over working out,” she shared. “But I always had my childhood home to n get lost. Still do. Grateful to be in a much better mental space now. s/o to those days tho.”

This isn’t the first time that the singer has opened up about her mental health with fans. As highlighted by Billboard, back in 2021 the singer took to Instagram to share her struggle with anxiety.

“I hate being outside more than I can explain,” she wrote in the caption. “I really have debilitating anxiety and I’m only posting these [photos] cause Y’all woulda found em anyway… Least I’m alive.”

She also spoke about her decision to get a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) in a cover story for British Vogue last month and shared how she is continuing her mental health journey. “I have other shit that I need to work on about myself. I need to get my fucking mental health together,” she explained. “Not to say you can’t do those things simultaneously, just, for me, I realise wherever you go, there you’ll be.”

SZA is currently dominating the charts thanks to the recent ‘Lana’ album – a deluxe reissue of her 2022 record ‘SOS’ that includes 15 additional tracks. She has also teased that a number of “new songs” are set for release later this month.

In other SZA news, the singer recently appeared on Kendrick Lamar’s surprise album ‘GNX’, and the pair announced a joint North American tour for later this year. Visit here for tickets and more information.
