BBC Antiques Road Trip expert 'in tears' after co-star's bruta remark on catastrophic loss
An Antiques Road Trip star admitted he was feeling teary after suffering a double, devastating loss at auction. Raj Bisram - who joined the programme back in 2015 - told co-star Charles Hanson that his eyes had “popped out” following a series of poor decisions.
The long-running BBC programme Antiques Road Trip sees two collectable specialists being handed a cool £200 to try and make some money at auction. Last year, Raj, 68, and chartered surveyor Charles, 46, packed themselves into an iconic 1971 Volkswagen Campervan and travelled across Wales in hopes of uncovering a bargain.
Unfortunately for Raj, his trip wasn’t entirely a success. Viewers watched the expert taking a gamble on an expensive Victorian bedpost (£160) that had been converted to work as a hat rack as well as forking out on a unique African birthing chair.
He bought the latter for an eye-watering sum of £170, and regardless of his good feelings, the gambles didn’t pay off. Upon finalising their items, Raj and Charles headed to Tring Market Auctions to watch the goods go under the hammer.
The African birthing chair was first to go up and despite its high price tag, bidding started at a measly £50. The starting price caused the antique expert to hang his head in shame - and it only got worse.

Neither of Raj's items did well under the hammer. (Image: BBC)After a round of lacklustre bidding, the item was sold for £70. This initially left Raj with a gaping £90 loss and saw him go behind in the competition.
“Oh, it's going so well,” he said sardonically before watching his converted bedpost go under the hammer.

Raj’s second item going for well under the asking price saw him accumulate another whopping loss, this time bringing it to £122. Commenting on his loss, his fellow companion Charles remarked: "Oh it's popped out!"

Following neither the bedpost nor the birthing chair making a splash at the Herefordshire auctioneers, Raj admitted after that the event had caused him to fight back tears.
"I think my eyes have just popped out and the tears are about to roll,” Raj stated.
Luckily the programme did see some success, with Charles walking away with a £520.96 kitty. This was an improvement on his competitor’s measly £184.32.
