BBC Breakfast's Sally Nugent forced to apologise after guest swears on air

BBC Breakfast: Sally Nugent forced to apologise for guest swearing on air

On Tuesday’s instalment of hosts and spoke to Steve Bell and Nicolette Jones who were at the Raymond Briggs exhibition in Ditchling. During their chat, the duo were speaking about the illustrator's work.

Many viewers will recognise some of Raymond's well-known classics such as The Snowman and Father Christmas. However, when Steve spoke about his friendship with the illustrator, he accidentally let slip a word not suitable for morning television.

He said: “We had this mutual regard which was great, it was mainly taking the p**s out of each other but he was such great fun. His artistry is just so superb.”

Touching on his slip-up Jon addressed Nicolette as he asked: “Watching our language, can I just say in terms of Raymond, his artwork and books are fantastically loved by children but also parents and grandparents.”

Although neither Steve nor Nicolette seemed to pick up on the mishap, Sally issued an apology to viewers after the interview drew to a close. She said: “Thank you both very much indeed for talking to us this morning.

“Apologies if anyone was offended by the choice of language in that interview just a moment ago.”

Jon joked: “We should haver done it in pictures and not words, he’d be a bit safer wouldn't he?”

However, the pair seemed to take the blunder in good humour as they both laughed about Steve’s explicit language. It wasn’t long before viewers were quick to comment on Steve’s blunder as many thought the ordeal was hilarious.

Elsewhere in the interview, Steve touched more on his friendship with the illustrator after they met judging a competition together in Brighton.

He continued: “They say you shouldn’t meet your heroes but in this case, he was a lovely, wonderful, warm, interesting and funny person.

“We became friends. We had a mutual respect I think, I’ve always adored his work I think his artistry is supreme. He respected the fact I was good at deadlines! I was very good at churning it out.

“He only had one deadline a year whereas I had seven or eight a week.”
