Peter Davison has dropped a bombshell about the potential replacement for in as he teased a return to the BBC drama. The veteran actor, who is no stranger to the hit series himself, shared his thoughts on the possibility of taking over the role during an exclusive chat with Express.co.uk and other media outlets.

When pressed about whether he would consider the opportunity, Davison admitted: "Yes, I don't know. I remember talking to Ben Miller, who found the schedule in Death in Paradise a bit relentless. I'm always up for a challenge. So I would not rule it out but I think the chances are they may go to someone a bit younger."

Peter's recent role was in the popular Death in Paradise spin-off, Beyond Paradise, where he reunited with and Barbara Flynn. He joined the series as a love interest for Barbara's character Anne, but his screen time was abruptly ended when Anne discovered his secret wife.

Speaking about the potential comeback of his character, Peter disclosed: "That is not sadly up to me but Barbara and I were about ways in which we can get me back into the series. I think that one of the last things he says to her is, 'Let me explain'."

With a glimmer of hope, he added: "I said, 'Yeah give me a chance to explain, come on, have me back so I can explain what was going on'. So you know on the face of it, he's just taking advantage or rather I don't know how much he's taking advantage.

"He's selling them this story so that he can you know, have lovely dinners and have these dates with Barbara or maybe there are other women as well."

Digging deeper into his character's intentions, Peter stated: "What his intentions are beyond that, it's certainly not clear. There's no way in which he seems to be trying to get money out of them or anything like that. So I think maybe he deserves a chance to explain what he meant."

Peter played a red herring in Death in Paradise and saw him becoming one of Humphrey's murder suspects.

And while he worked with Humphrey in Saint Marie, Peter's character didn't cross paths with the DI in Beyond Paradise.

"Of course, the main thing about Death in Paradise is it's filmed in the Caribbean," the Doctor Who star stated.

"And Kris was heavily involved in that and as you said, it was the second show. I didn't have a scene with Kris in this episode. I saw him many times in the green room and when we were waiting to do scenes, but sadly, I had no scenes with him. So it didn't seem like it was the same character but it didn't seem like the same show.

"Interesting enough, Sally Bretton is in it and so is Barbara obviously, and [Beyond Paradise] is in this lovely part of England. It's a lovely show to do...it's lovely to film down there, and I am sorry I wasn't in more of it, to be honest with you."

Beyond Paradise returns at 8pm on BBC One.
