BBC Beyond Paradise fans ecstatic over nod to iconic Death In Paradise character

Death in Paradise: Humprey talks about saving aunt Mary's dementia

Beyond Paradise viewers were delighted during the latest instalment of the police procedural when Humphrey Goodman (played by Kris Marshall) made reference to a character last seen on screens eight years ago. In the storyline, one of the characters was suffering from dementia which led him to refer back to his iconic Aunt Mary (Wendy Craig) who was last seen when he was still on Saint Marie in Death In Paradise in 2016.

"My Aunt Mary has dementia," he said. "So I hope I have some small understanding of what it must be like for you. You know I only wish I could offer you some words of comfort."

It was only a couple of sentences but it sparked a fan frenzy as they took to X, formerly known as Twitter to share their excitement. @bymbeth13 exclaimed: "Aunt Mary shoutout !!! #beyondparadise."

@kodiakmoonwolf gushed: "#BeyondParadise Aunt Mary reference!!!!! Love when we get the nods back to a character's established past...loved that episode of #deathinparadise with Aunt Mary."

@carlagodfrey recalled: "Aunt Mary! He gave her a 'rocking chair' moment. #beyondparadise." @noitsabi was so excited they wrote all in capitals: "@BeyondPOfficial AUNT MARY MENTION #beyondparadise."

Meanwhile, @SophFigueira95 enquired: "The aunt Mary we met on @deathinparadise? #BeyondParadise." @hopalongcassell simply commented: "AUNT MARY OH MY GOSH #BeyondParadise."

Although Humphrey didn't expand further, the news that Aunt Mary is still alive opens the door for her return.

With Humphrey and fiancee Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) planning their wedding, could she perhaps turn up as a surprise guest?

TV legend Wendy Craig, who played her, is still going strong at 89 so it is not impossible that she could make an appearance.

Asked why she took the role at the time the Butterflies icon said: "Well, it came out of the blue and I’ve never been to the Caribbean before, so it was indeed a wonderful opportunity. I just thought it would be fun. What an adventure for an old lady to have.

"It seems that she has had a big hand in bringing him up so Aunt Mary is very close to him. She’s bright, intelligent and humorous," she teased.

Whether or not this heralds her return fans will just have to wait and see.

Beyond Paradise is on BBC One on Friday nights at 8pm.
