Hotel Review: Hyatt Regency Amsterdam

When I heard a new Hyatt was going to be opening in Amsterdam earlier this year, I knew I wanted to take advantage of its opening offer. It was also promoting itself as a business hotel in the center of the city, so I thought it would be a great option for my stay, which was a combination of work and pleasure. Here’s what it was like to stay at the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam.

In This Post Booking

The hotel was offering rates from 247 euros (~$281 at the time) per night for a standard king room, so the total for a three-night stay came to 776.48 euros (~$886). I booked directly through the website so I’d receive the bonus points I was entitled to as a Hyatt Globalist member, and paid with my Chase Sapphire Reserve Card, which allowed me to earn 3x points for the travel purchase or, in this case, a total of 2,658 Ultimate Rewards points. I also earned 13,201 World of Hyatt points on this trip.

Check-In

I arrived at the hotel at 8:00am — I had requested early check-in via email the night before — after a 20-minute cab ride from the airport that cost around 50 euros (~$58). I later learned Uber would’ve cost approximately 35 euros (~$41). The hotel was located on a tree-lined street near East Amsterdam, a neighborhood filled with bars, restaurants and plenty to see and do. You could rent bicycles from the hotel, making all major tourist sites accessible — it took us about 10 to 15 minutes to pedal to the iconic “I Amsterdam” sign, for instance.

The check-in desk was situated right through the front door. Though the staff at the front desk were extremely friendly, my king room wasn’t ready yet.

I grabbed breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant as I waited, enjoying the salmon, eggs and avocado toast.

The lobby featured a memorable plant wall, made of real plants, and a bar. The whole hotel had a hip, cool, lounge vibe with a feeling of nature mixed in.

I thought the Hyatt made a great option for business travelers stopping in Amsterdam. There was a ton of work space and according to the website, more than 5,500 square feet of meeting and events space.

After the front desk agent notified me that my room was ready and that my bags had been brought up to it, I took the elevator to the third floor (European second). I absolutely loved the elevators in this hotel. The background made for a great selfie opportunity and I really enjoyed the chic, floral design.

The Original Room

I made my way up to my standard king room, which was exactly as described: standard. It did have nice natural light though.

There was a workstation, but considering this was a new hotel, it already looked a little beaten up.

There was a big-screen TV next to the workstation.

A mini-fridge with drinks, coffee, tea was available, as was an espresso machine.

And then I found hairs all over the floor of the bathroom. It was as if the hotel had not cleaned the bathroom after the last guest had checked out.

I immediately called down to the front desk to let them know. The agent was apologetic and told me they were looking for a replacement room ASAP, but I had to call three times before they moved me. Eventually, I was moved next door to what happened to be the exact same kind of room as the original. There weren’t any upgrades available that night, but I was assured I would be upgraded for the remaining two nights. The bathroom in the new standard king room had a glass shower and toilet with glass doors — and, thankfully, no hair on the floor.

The Suite I Was Upgraded To

The next afternoon, as promised, I was upgraded to a suite. It was spacious and one of the nicest rooms the hotel offers, with a living room with a TV, a large walk-in closet, a soaking tub, two sinks, a comfortable king-size bed and a second TV in the bedroom. The door of the suite opened to the living room, which had a nice sitting area as well.

There was a full-length mirror right at the entrance.

The sitting area had a couch and chair that were quite comfortable.

There was also a workstation in the suite, the same one as I’d had in the standard king room.

The chair would’ve been perfect to curl up in with a great book.

The king-size bed wasn’t much different from the one that had been in the standard king room.

The bed faced the second flat-screen TV in the suite.

The bathroom was one of my favorite parts of the suite: It had a clock built into the vanity mirror, double sinks, a soaking tub, a big shower and toilet. There were robes and hair dryers, which I consider a must when traveling internationally since you’re dealing with non-US outlets. The vanity had lots of space and two sinks.

The shampoo, conditioner, body wash and soap amenities were by Pharmacopia.

The soaking tub was a nice upgrade from the previous room.

The shower was pretty tall and would definitely pass the TPG shower test. The water was always hot and the pressure was great.

The walk-in closet had plenty of space for unpacking and storing bags.

Amenities

The executive lounge was on the second floor of the hotel. It was stylish, had comfortable seating and served as a nice alternative to the lobby for business travelers. Both times I visited, though, it was empty. There were light bites and coffee available, with lots of seating.

The other side had comfortable seating options as well.

The hotel lobby had a bar with snacks, drinks and coffee available from morning to evening.

Here’s a look at the lobby at night. I loved the feeling of nature that was present throughout my entire stay.

The Wi-Fi was free and you could rent bikes to take around town for 15 euros (~$17) per day. Amsterdam’s the city of bicycles, after all!

Food and Beverage

One of my favorite parts of this hotel was the restaurant, Mama Makan, which featured tasty Indonesian food. I would even say the dinner was one of my favorites in Amsterdam. I tried the duck Magret with black cherries, andaliman pepper and sweet potato mash.

The mi goreng Java was really good, too, with javanese noodles, prawns, chicken and vegetables.

Apple pie is a must in Amsterdam.

For breakfast at Mama Makan, we had the option of eating at the buffet or ordering a la carte.

The buffet offered fresh fruit, dried fruits, eggs and pastries, among other breakfast items.

The hotel gym had a variety of equipment…

…including plenty of free weights.

If you wanted to sit outside, the back of the hotel also had a nice patio area to relax in.

Overall Impression

The Hyatt Regency Amsterdam was a solid choice for my business trip. Despite the lack of cleanliness I’d discovered in first room, the upgrade was well worth my stay there. I loved the lobby decor, especially for the hours I spent working from the hotel. The staff were incredibly friendly. I did feel it was located kind of far from the areas we spent most of our time in, but I would definitely consider staying here again on my next trip to Amsterdam.
