I got the chance to check out Hyatt’s newly opened Andaz Singapore while I was in the city to cover Singapore Airlines’ new A380 cabin products. The space had just opened three days before my arrival, but this one is poised to be a top option for those looking for a modern place with a fun, local vibe in one of Southeast Asia’s most crowded hotel markets.

In This Post Location

The new Andaz property is located in a brand-new development called DUO Singapore. As the name would suggest, it’s a two-tower complex that also houses residences and office space. It’s situated near Singapore’s famous Marina Bay at the intersection of the city’s Kampong Glam, Little India and Bras Basah Bugis districts, which means excellent food and shopping aren’t more than a few minutes away. Getting to and from the hotel is easy, as there’s a direct connection to the city’s metro system known as the MRT at the Bugis Street station. It’s also only about a 20-minute drive to Singapore’s Changi Airport (SIN).

How to Book

The Andaz isn’t a cheap hotel — at the time of this writing, base rooms with either one king bed or two twin beds will set you back $312 per night in February 2018.

The great thing about Hyatt properties, though, is that they’re easy to book with points. This hotel is a category 6 property, meaning each award night will cost 25,000 World of Hyatt points. The Hyatt Credit Card is currently offering a sign-up bonus of 40,000 points after you spend $2,000 within the first three months of account opening.

Additionally, if you have an Ultimate Reward point-earning card such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve or Chase Sapphire Preferred, you can transfer your points earned from those cards to World of Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio. Both cards are offering sign-up bonuses of 50,000 points after you spend $4,000 within the first three months of account opening.

Arrival and Lobby

You enter the Andaz Singapore on the third floor of the tower — there you’ll find meeting and event spaces, as well as an elevator bank that you use to reach the lobby on the 25th floor.

The lobby in this hotel (and most other Andaz hotels) is part of a greater “living space” that contains plenty of seating, and places to grab a drink, snacks or a full meal. Check-in is completed at the two desks pictured below to either side of the planter in the center.

The hotel offers guests free refreshments in one of the lobby spaces that it calls “Sunroom.” Additionally, there’s the “Andaz Lounge Hour,” which features free wine and beer — including the hotel’s signature brew, Andaz Pale Ale — for two hours each night (5 to 7pm).

Dining

You won’t be going hungry at this hotel — the 25th floor boasts a locally inspired dining experience called the Alley on 25. There are five distinct restaurants and one bar all connected in one “alley,” which is meant to reflect the local tradition of Hawker Centers — essentially giant food alleys that contain many different food and drink stalls to choose from.

I ate lunch at one of the restaurants known as The Green Oven. Unsurprisingly, the centerpiece of the restaurant is its large green oven in which all the dishes are cooked.

I ordered the roasted spring chicken served with roasted vegetables along with a cocktail called the Marzipisco — made with Pisco, lemon, orgeat, and Angostura bitters. I thought the lunch was fantastic, especially for a restaurant that had just begun serving guests three days prior.

The Alley on 25 is essentially a completely open space — you can move from one restaurant to the next seamlessly.

You’ll find a variety of dining experiences, from authentic Singaporean cuisine to that of its neighbors in the region.

The Room

Thanks to World of Hyatt Globalist status and a (likely) empty hotel, I was upgraded to a Premium Suite for my brief stay. I wish I’d had more time at the hotel because the suite was stunning. The hotel’s 342 guest rooms were designed by Andre Fu, who is known for his work at The Upper House in Hong Kong.

The vibe at the Andaz is understated — this hotel isn’t about in-your-face ostentatiousness, but rather local, relaxed luxury. There are elements of Singapore’s famous shophouses all over the hotel, and my room was no exception. The plaque denoting the room number outside is reminiscent of a mailbox that you’d find on a typical shophouse. The faux shutter and circular knocker add to the local look.

Immediately after walking into the room, there’s a foyer area with more local influence in the yellow-colored swinging doors.

Immediately to the right in the foyer area was a half-bath — perfect for guests.

The main area of the suite included a rocking chair and the sleeping area, which featured a king-size bed and flat-screen TV opposite it.

At the end of the suite is a sitting area featuring a gorgeous sectional bench along with two small round tables. There was also a coffee maker and a complimentary selection of snacks and beverages (non-alcoholic only).

The room’s location provided sweeping vistas of the city’s central business district (CBD).

The bathroom continued the understated luxury look of the suite with an abundance of light woods and stone for the furnishings. It featured double vanities with round, lighted mirrors. Even better, it featured a separate soaking tub with city and marina views.

Amenities

The standout feature of this property is its rooftop pool (a common sight in Singapore). Located on the 25th floor, the pool provides stunning views of the CBD and Marina Bay. I lucked out during my stay — there was only one other guest at the pool for the majority of the time I was there.

The hotel features a 24-hour fitness center, too, but it wasn’t quite complete when I was there. There’s also a bar on the 39th floor called Mr. Stork. The bar wasn’t operational during my stay, but I got to take a look. The hotel clearly thinks they have a space designed for Instagram — patrons can sip on their beverages in individual teepees while overlooking Singapore’s hyper-modern skyline.

Overall Impression

The Andaz Singapore will likely be a hit with visitors to the Southeast Asian city. Its understated yet thoroughly modern and luxurious design will appeal to many, and the seemingly endless drinking and eating options will keep guests happy throughout their stays. Throw in an Instagram-worthy infinity pool and rooftop bar, and the hotel is establishing itself as a top option in a city with an abundance of mostly older, stuffier hotel options.
