Lane Kiffin seems to have learned a lot from his time with Nick Saban. And now he’s trying to replicate a lot of what Saban did at his hew home at Florida Atlantic.
In the words of the former Alabama offensive coordinator, as told ESPN’s Chris Low, he’d be stupid not to.
“We joke about Coach Saban and my time there, but how dumb would I be not to copy a lot of what Nick Saban did?” Kiffin said. “He’s the best head coach in college football right now, and the good thing for me is that I’ve had a chance to work now for Coach Saban and Pete Carroll, two guys who do it totally different, and I can combine the two and take the parts I like from both and use them here at Florida Atlantic.”
Kiffin did mention that he would be doing some things differently in his time at Alabama, such as playing music while on the practice fields. But in Low’s article, Kiffin now notes some of the many Sabanesque qualities he’s picked up, such as no-longer focusing on one side of the ball but rather every single detail.
He also showed an appreciation for Saban offering him a job after he had been dismissed at USC, citing how no one was really willing to offer him a job after his exit. And he even owned up to the fact that those famous “ass-chewings” he’d get from Saban from time-to-time were sometimes earned.
“I got a little too loose with my mouth,” Kiffin told Low.
From 2014 through 2016 Kiffin was Alabama’s offensive coordinator and the Crimson Tide compiled a 40-4 record in games with Kiffin as the Crimson Tide offensive coordinator, and he did it with three different starting quarterback. Of course, Kiffin left after the Washington game in the College Football Playoff and saw the Crimson Tide fall to Clemson in the national title game.
In the article, Kiffin said he watched the game on a television in his office and agonized over not being involved in the game.
