OK, so who are our biggest rivals? Most of the time I say LSU but I realized with Texas here this week, I still hate the Longhorns.
That’s a text message I received from a friend mid-Monday afternoon. He’s about my age, early-to-mid 30s. We are, this generation, a touch too young to truly recall the days of Texas hatred for the Razorbacks. Most of our coming-of-age years were spent with the Hogs in their early years of the SEC. People our parents age, though? Longhorns animus runs real and deep.
That’s part of why Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon out at Baum Stadium is going to be so fun. The Horns are in Fayetteville for a two-game, somewhat important nonconference set. Texas isn’t quite national title-contender level, but top-25ish. Arkansas, of course, is top-5 in the nation. Throw in that the game Tuesday night is at 7 p.m. — plenty of time to get off work and head out the ballpark — and the stadium is definitely going to be rocking.
Because even though I would say — here comes the answer — LSU is Arkansas’ biggest rival, no one around here much likes Texas. Even if you don’t hate Texas, being from this state, or from mine one state to the West, you are more or less taught, in varying degrees, to despise burnt orange. The school, and heck, the city of Austin, carries the vibe of arrogance a lot of other Southerners just cannot stomach.
Still, yeah, I have to agree with the writer’s initial sentiments. The days of the Southwest Conference are long gone. Arkansas hasn’t been a part of it in 25-plus years. Stories passed down are great, and they stir some animosity among those who didn’t live through it, but they are all in past tense.
But, really, The Boot still hangs as the most significant trophy Arkansas can win in its regular season. So many classic LSU-Hogs memories and wild finishes are fresher in the brain.
But, by golly, you better believe I’m psyched for Texas coming to town as an unbiased observer. It’s gonna be a blast.
