Tim Tebow receives minor league assignment from New York Mets

The Tim Tebow baseball saga carries on as the 2017 baseball regular season draws near.

According to a report from Newsday’s Marc Carig, the former Florida quarterback will head for Columbia, S.C., at the conclusion of spring training.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson revealed the plan for Tebow: Join the Mets’ Class A affiliate Columbia Fireflies to play every day as a corner outfielder. Alderson told Newsday on Monday:

“Sending him to a full season club is what we hoped to be able to do. And based on what he’s done in spring training, and his whole body of work since last fall, we feel comfortable with him going to Columbia.

“We were concerned that it might be a stretch at some point, or could be a stretch. But what he’s done in spring training has convinced us that this is where he should go. And he’s prepared for it.”

It’s really all Tebow, 29, could ask for at this point — a chance to prove his worth as an everyday player in the minor leagued.

Tebow spent time in the Mets big-league camp during spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fla. He hit .235 in those opportunities, which is not bad considering he got off to a dreadful start. He recently put together a multi-hit game and showed off some glove work in the field, but he has yet to show the monster power many expected him to have when he signed with the Mets last year.

Class A ball is a long way from the Major League Baseball, and Tebow’s audition time is likely to be limited because of his age. But observers must respect Tebow for chasing his baseball dream in the face of much doubt and national scrutiny.
