An Italian gossip show has been pulled off the air after its host came under attack for presenting viewers with a list of reasons to date Eastern European women that included their willingness to more easily forgive cheaters.
A graphic for show, called “Let’s talk about it… Saturday,” or “Parliamone… Sabato,” presented viewers with six reasons for Italian men to pursue relationships with Eastern European women instead of Italians. The female host spoke to a panel of celebrities to ask them why Italian men preferred to date foreigners.
The widely read graphic suggested that Eastern European women are both more forgiving of cheaters, and are more “willing to let their men rule.”
– They are all moms, but after giving birth they regain their figure
– They are always sexy. No tracksuits or pajamas
– They forgive cheating
– They are willing to let their man rule
– They are perfect housewives. They learn how to perform house chores at young age
– They don’t whine or get clingy, and they never hold a grudge.
The image made the rounds on Twitter, where users responded with parodies in the hashtag #parliamonsebato. Many commented that they felt like they’d stepped into a time machine to the 1950s as they watched the show, which was aired on state-run broadcaster Rai Uno.
Italy’s President of the Chamber of Deputies, Laura Boldrini, called the show’s content “unacceptable” and “offensive,” according to the BBC. Italian newspapers La Stampa and Repubblica led a chorus of condemnation towards the show’s host, Paola Perego, for fetishizing Eastern European women, forcing the broadcaster to respond.
The broadcaster’s director Andrea Fabiano released a public apology for the segment, calling it a mistake. “Errors must be recognized without excuses. I apologize to everyone for what has been seen and heard at #Parliamonsabato,” Fabiano tweeted.
Ultimately, Rai Uno canceled the talk show.
