After tour of SEC schools, only LSU reminds Maurice Hampton of home

Credit: seccountry.com

Maurice Hampton‘s tour through SEC West schools this spring was all about finding the right fit.

It turns out, his final stop — which just happened to be the same as his where it all started last July — just happened to provide the 4-star cornerback with the feeling that he was searching for.

Hampton, a 2019 LSU commit, returned to Baton Rouge for the program’s national junior day on Saturday for the first time since taking in the Alabama game on Nov. 5 beside 2017 Tigers signees JaCoby Stevens and Kary Vincent Jr. Yet again, Hampton felt that same electricity during his return visit back to campus that he felt on that memorable Saturday night in Death Valley.

“The return visit went well especially after visiting a couple of other places,” Hampton told SEC Country. “It just reminded me that LSU is home.”

Hampton’s spring tour included stops at Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Alabama. Each of the SEC powers extended offers to the 5-foot-11, 190-pound dual-sport standout.

Hampton’s offer sheet is rather impressive already, but only one school continues to check all of his boxes. It just so happens to be where the Memphis (Tenn.) University School product is already committed to.

“It’s just the way that everybody treats me down there … it’s just different,” Hampton explained. “It’s like a family down there, and that’s what sets it apart.”

Hampton is the No. 2 cornerback in the 2019 recruiting cycle and No. 33 overall prospect, per the 247Sports composite rankings. He’s one of two defensive backs in the Tigers’ 2019 class along with 4-star Louisiana cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. Both commits were on hand for Saturday’s scrimmage.

Hampton walked away impressed with the new feeling surrounding the team and the new coaching staff, not to mention the energy exuded during practice.

“The team looked good and the intensity of the defense was great,” he said. “All of the defensive backs looked good, so it’s going to be interesting to see who wins those starting jobs.”

Hampton singled out junior Kevin Toliver II and sophomore Saivion Smith as two of the corners that caught his attention. Their ability to thrive in press coverage was among his main takeaways.

That’s a credit to defensive backs coach Corey Raymond, who in between coaching up the young LSU secondary was able to spend quality time with his elite 2019 commit.

“Coach Raymond’s main message honestly had nothing to do with football,” Hampton said. “It was more focusing on what’s important now and not looking too far ahead, just being my best self now and making sure I make all of the right decisions for myself.”
