KEENE (AP) — A 75-year-old pilot has died while heading to a California gathering of vintage Soviet airplanes. Kern County coroner’s officials say Gilbert Thomas Gutierrez of Phoenix, Arizona, was killed in Thursday’s crash. His single-engine aircraft went down near the town of Keene, about 75 miles north of Los Angeles. MODESTO -- Modesto Police set up traffic cones Friday afternoon ahead of Ann Coulter's planned speech at the Stanislaus County Republican Party's annual Lincoln Day Dinner. Police remained tight-lipped about their security plans for Friday, after protests in Berkeley were tense but ultimately peaceful. Protests were expected to begin around 5 p.m., organizers said. A Canadian man who led the 2012 heist of millions of dollars worth of maple syrup received an eight-year prison sentence and multi-million dollar fine on Friday. Richard Vallières was fined $9.4 million, and will have to serve six additional years in prison if he does not pay it, for the theft of $18.7 million worth of maple syrup, the CBC reports. An FBI agent was shot and injured while trying to serve a warrant in Atlanta, authorities said on Friday. The agent was shot trying to serve an arrest warrant at a home, FBI Special Agent Stephen Emmett told the Associated Press. The agent suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. According to Emmet, another individual who was at the scene was killed. MARYSVILLE — A Monterey County judge has approved the relocation of a violent sex offender to Yuba County. Eldridge Chaney Jr. is set to move into a home just outside Marysville’s city limits. The Yuba County sheriff and district attorney are not happy with the decision, nor are neighbors, that Chaney won’t be housed in Monterey County.
